What goes wrong with hats and protective styles
Most hats assume your hair lies flat under a closed crown. Box braids, locs, twists and high buns don't, so a standard hat either perches on top, pushes your style out of place, or rubs along your edges all afternoon.
What to look for in hats for braids and locs
An opening, not a lid. The first four styles here are built around an open top or a rear ponytail opening, so your hair can sit where you put it. For braids or locs worn down, the deep-crown hats further along work too; choose Large.
Silk where it touches. The band or crown is lined in 22-momme, OEKO-TEX® certified 100% mulberry silk, designed to help reduce friction and frizz along your hairline and edges.
An adjustable fit. Braids and locs change how big your head measures. The Eclipse adjusts from 55–63 cm (21.7–24.8 in); the Eos and Veloura Flow are one adjustable size.
Which style for you
- Afros, puffs and high buns: the Eclipse open-top sun hat. Wide-brim shade with your hair free through the top.
- Walks, workouts and school runs: the Eos visor, open at the top with a silk-lined band.
- Locs or braids gathered at the back: the Flow ponytail sun hat, a full silk-lined crown with a rear opening, in Medium or Large.
- Box braids, knotless braids and twists, every day: the Veloura Flow cap, with an oversized rear opening and one adjustable size.
Hats for locs
Locs need room at the crown or a way out the back. The Eclipse leaves the top open; the Flow and Veloura Flow let a loc ponytail or bun through the rear opening. If your locs are gathered at the crown, size up: the Flow Large fits 58.5–60 cm (23.0–23.6 in).
Hats for afros and big natural hair
With no crown to press down, the Eclipse and Eos leave an afro its full shape. For a closed crown, see our hats for curly and wavy hair, and choose Large.

The Eclipse adjusts from 55–63 cm (21.7–24.8 in), and the Eos and Veloura Flow are one adjustable size. The Flow sun hat, fedoras and other sun hats come in Medium, 56.5–58 cm (22.2–22.8 in), and Large, 58.5–60 cm (23.0–23.6 in). Measure with your style in, just above the ears; with thick braids or locs, choose Large. Size exchanges are free.

Gather your hair where you want it first. For the Flow or Veloura Flow, feed the ponytail or bun through the rear opening, then settle the front of the hat at your hairline and adjust. For the Eclipse or Eos, loosen the band, lower it over your style, then tighten until it sits snug without pulling at your edges. To take it off, loosen the band or lift the hat straight up so it doesn't catch.
